'...you must be born again.' John 3:7 TLB
When Jesus talked to Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish High Court, about being 'born again', Nicodemus didn't get it: 'What do you mean? How can an old man go back into his mother's womb...' (John 3:4 NLT)? Sometimes being clever doesn't help! Jesus told Nicodemus, '...you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit' (John 3:8 NLT). In other words, 'You didn't have a clue what happened at your first birth, so why do you expect to understand your second birth?'
Some people think Christianity is a pre-packaged product. Do this but not that. Believe this but not that. But this is how Paul described it: 'the mystery hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to his saints' (Colossians 1:26 NIV). Who are the 'saints'? Us! You and me - anyone who will simply believe.
And what's this mystery he's talking about? '...God has chosen to make known... the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory' (Colossians 1:27 NIV). You could never get to the bottom of this concept; it's just too deep! The things of God cannot be explained, only revealed.
So what now? If you want a reason or explanation for everything, you'll struggle with your faith. All God asks is that you, a saint, trust him with a simple faith. As you do, he'll reveal more and more of this beautiful mystery to you.
