Loving others 2
'Carry each other's burdens.' Galatians 6:2 NIV
An important part of loving others is being there for them when they're going through tough times. God designed us to live in community and help each other out. The Bible says, 'Share each other's troubles and problems, and so obey our Lord's command' (Galatians 6:2 TLB). We should be aiming to help people cope and grow through difficult situations. We can do this is by encouraging them to talk about things, giving a different perspective and offering hope - asking God to give us the words to say and to show us his promises throughout the Bible to share with them.
But, it's important to remember that when we're 'carrying each other's burdens' that we don't take on too much responsibility. It's only God who can truly fix our problems. Psalm 121:1-2 (GNT) says, 'I look to the mountains - where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made Heaven and earth.'
It's also important to continue caring for the person when the immediate crisis is over. Just because an illness has healed, a funeral has finished, or the person appears to be coping, doesn't mean that they no longer need our support and love. Loving others is much more than just being there through their tough times; it's supporting them through life.
So what now? Do you know someone going through a difficult time? Ask God to show you one of his promises for them, and encourage them with it. Let God love them through you.
