Being a Christian 2
'...The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.' Acts 11:26 NAS
The New Testament Christians dedicated themselves to making Jesus Lord of their lives and establishing his rule wherever they went. Listen: 'They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved' (Acts 2:42-47 NIV).Did it cost them? Yes: 'The high priest and his associates... arrested the apostles and put them in public jail...then they brought the apostles before the high counsel... but Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than any human authority"...They [the high counsel] called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left... rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus (Acts 5:17-18: 21, 29, 40-42 Paraphrase). The persecution paled in the light of the greatness of Jesus. So what now? Here in New Zealand, you will experience different kinds of persecution for following Jesus. But, that's part of making Jesus Lord of your life.
