Three tips for growth
'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.' Matthew 16:24 NIV
Here are some tips to help you grow in your day-to-day relationship with God: (1) Deny yourself: allow Jesus to sit in the driving seat of your life! He takes you in the best direction. We've all heard of back seat drivers, passengers who tell the driver what to do: 'Speed up!', 'Slow down!' They are usually not very helpful and can't see things from the right perspective. Don't become a back seat driver to Jesus, saying he's in charge but also wanting things your own way. Denying yourself means trusting Jesus knows best for your life and not just going in the direction or speed you think is right!
(2) Take up your cross. The Bible says, '...count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus' (Romans 6:11 NIV). The cross symbolises all that Christ purchased for you: love, forgiveness, freedom and redemption. The cross you carry is all that Jesus has done for you, which you then extend to others. Die to sin but gain Jesus and grow!
(3) Follow him. It is not God's job to follow you, it is your job to follow him! When you do, it will cost you, change you, and challenge you. Sometimes you will have a rough ride, other times you'll be cruising. Be willing to follow him anywhere, under any conditions; following him is the quickest way to real growth!
So what now? Still want to be a disciple of Jesus? 'Of course', we hear you say! It's totally worth it.
