Keeping together 2
'Love... cannot be bought, no matter what is offered.' Song of Solomon 8:7 CEV
What would tempt you away from your spouse? If you're not married, what would separate you from your best friend? Or, what could someone offer you that would tempt you away from God? It's easy for us to say, 'I wouldn't let anything come between me and God'. And we mean it. But be honest - have you ever put off your Bible study to do something more 'fun'? Decided not to pray because you're too busy? We don't mean to let these 'little' things get in the way, but if we can give in to the little things, we lower our resistance to the bigger things. If we struggle with commitment to our perfect heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally, we're going to come up against difficulty with imperfect, flawed human beings.
All relationships are made up of imperfect people. Let's not forget we're one of the 'imperfect'! But, even though we make mistakes, God never gives up on us or stops being committed to us. The Bible tells us that there's nothing that can separate us from God's love (see Romans 8:38-39).
So first, let's work on our commitment to God. As we strengthen our relationship with him, we'll discover that, like him, we can love unconditionally and give generously, and allow others to be real, limited, changeable human beings. When we commit first to God, it holds our earthly relationships together.
So what now? Make love your first priority in relationships. That's what God does.
