All knowing and kind

Monday, 4 August 2025

God's omniscience (all-knowingness) gets a lot of bad press, especially outside of the Church. 'Don't do that. God's watching'... as if he's a security guard with eight billion screens trying to catch us out every other second. But if we understand that God is love - which he is (see 1 John 4:8) - we'll understand his all-knowingness from a different perspective.

Ever seen those 'guilty dog' clips on YouTube? They're brilliant. People coming home to upturned bins and shredded paper, and a line of canine-pet suspects... the guilty party's always the one with the big eyes and bin lid hat.

So often when we sin or mess up, we're hesitant to go to God. But the reality is he knows everything already; he sees our innermost thoughts as easily as we can read huge puppy eyes. That's good news. We don't have to live in fear of him discovering our mess and, in anger, sending us to bed with no treats. He already sees the mess, and he's ready to deal with it lovingly. We just have to take it to him. And when we do go to Jesus to sort things out, we can approach him with confidence, knowing that he's done everything to restore us to himself in the first place.

So what now? Go clean up any mess (big or small) you've made. It may be hard, but it's worth it to set things right. Go to your loving, gracious Father confidently, knowing that he kindly longs to help you restore your life.
