An unselfish life (1)

Wednesday, 15 October 2025

Have we ever planned an unselfish act but held off on it until there was a time (or Facebook post) where people would see our work? The apostle Paul challenges us: rather than our own idea of what humility looks like, he asks us to mimic Jesus' style (see Philippians 2:5). In a world where most things are centred around making us look good, Jesus' mind is set on shining the light on God. How are we supposed to replicate that?

Well, the original Greek Paul wrote in said that we should have the same 'mind' as Jesus - to literally think like he did. Hmm. Suppose our best bet is to ask him, isn't it? When we put aside our own agendas, and ask Jesus what he thinks, we're open to those who really need our help.

Each day we encounter people who could do with an others-focused person who'll put aside their own concerns and help them and, more than that, shine a light on God for them. The challenge is to put aside our own inclination to help only those who help us, and ask Jesus what he thinks. Are we willing to make that trade?

So what now? Ask Jesus to help you purposely lead your life unselfishly. Start small and 'close to home' - help your mum and dad, or flatmates, or workmates with a chore or task. Give an older or less able person your time over a cup of coffee. Learn to spot and know when people need your help.
