Keep your conscience clear
Sometimes we want to justify what we're doing and say, 'It feels right, so it can't be wrong.' But if God's word says something is wrong, it's wrong, no matter how right it feels. The old saying 'Let your conscience be your guide' is only half the truth. The other half should read, 'as long as your conscience is grounded in and guided by the clear teachings of God's word.'
As a redeemed child of God, we're called to live by his commandments instead of by our feelings, impulses and emotions, or by popular thinking. When God guides us, temptation is much less likely to sweep us off course or shipwreck us.
Paul wrote: 'Timothy, my son, here is my command to you: Fight well in the Lord's battles, just as the Lord told us through his prophets that you would. Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right. For some people have disobeyed their consciences and have deliberately done what they knew was wrong. It isn't surprising that soon they lost their faith in Christ' (1 Timothy 1:18-20 TLB).
Some 'rights' and 'wrongs' are pretty clear cut, but some need deeper time in prayer for clarity on how to handle. Let's ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us discernment, to help us live with our conscience grounded in God's word.
So what now? Keep your conscience led by God's word. This is the safest place for you to be, emotionally and spiritually.
