Say yes to Jesus

Monday, 23 February 2026

We may often say 'Yes' when we mean 'No'? We may kick ourselves afterward when we can't say 'No' because we don't want to disappoint people. If we say 'Yes' too much, we'll find ourselves doing things we don't want to do (possibly even things we know are not good).

Acts 5:17-41 is a beautiful portrayal of the apostles' sincere desire to please God over men. They were asked to stop preaching in Jesus' name, 'But Peter and the apostles replied, "'We must obey God rather than any human authority."' The high priest had the authority to throw them into jail, but the apostles knew who they'd said 'Yes' to: God. And once they said 'Yes,' it empowered them to say 'No' to the things that simply weren't worth giving up Jesus for.

It can be pretty intimidating when people mock us or argue against us for being Christians, but listen to what a Pharisee said about the apostles, 'So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourself fighting against God' (Acts 5:38-39 NLT). Whatever storm blows up around us, with God we're not able to be overthrown.

So what now? Where do you need to say 'No' to people, and 'Yes' to Jesus? Ask the Holy Spirit to give you boldness today, then go and live empowered.
