The other Kingdom

Saturday, 16 May 2026

As Christians, we are called to love as Christ loved us. But washing feet! And the whole cross thing! That seems like taking it a bit too far. To do that takes unbelievable amounts of grace. Why would we be set such a massive goal to attain? Well, when we forgive, we lift the curtain to another Kingdom, a Kingdom that most of the world rarely gets the chance to see. People far from God get a glimpse of something that isn't normal, run-of-the-mill life to them; something that goes beyond what the world around them could ever provide.

Those moments happen when Christians demonstrate what it means to really live as followers of Christ. In Jesus' time, the Jewish people were persecuted and downtrodden. Jesus didn't call them to rise up in a violent revolution; he called them to bless those who persecute them.

Imagine a world where the first reaction to the word 'Christian' was to think of people who love outrageously. It was once: barely 100 years after the resurrection, Christians in plague-ridden Rome stayed behind after the upper classes had fled, to nurse the sick, even at the risk of death. People saw their love and converted in droves. What a thing to be known for; but that's what we are meant to be known for.

So what now? There will be people you really struggle with. Think about ways to practically show them love today, even if they are the last people to deserve it (in your opinion). Step into that other Kingdom.
