The power of forgiveness (1)
The temptation to take things into our own hands is inbuilt' especially when it comes to responding to someone who has treated us badly. Even if we're well versed in Christian how-to, it can be a struggle not to bypass talking to God and go straight to hurting that person back.
But here's the thing. God wants to take care of setting things straight. In fact, he says, 'Vengeance is mine' (Romans 12:19 NKJV), so we know he doesn't let wrongdoing slip under the radar. But, and it's a big but: we're not perfect, either. By judging others, we open ourselves up to being shown up as not-so-pure-after-all: 'in the same way you judge others, you will be judged' (Matthew 7:2 NIV). Perhaps revenge isn't worth it, after all.
Joseph knew a thing or two about 'revenge or not'. Bullied, abandoned, imprisoned, all because of his eleven brothers. Did he get his own back when he finally met them again years later as a leader in Egypt? No. He grew in faith with God and realised the good in his situation (see Genesis 50:20). The fact that he was willing to give his brothers another chance opened the door for family reconciliation, despite all that had happened (Genesis 50:19-21). None of that would have been possible without Joseph's willingness to put his ego aside and make room for forgiveness.
So what now? Today, say something positive to, give something to, or pray for as many people as you can. Including those you find difficult. More challenges tomorrow...
