Use your words well

Wednesday, 28 October 2026

We may sometimes feel powerless to help someone going through a rough time - if we feel that all we have to offer is words. We may avoid saying anything because no words seem helpful enough. But, let's think back to the difficult times in our life. The moments we remember are when people encouraged us, with words that mattered and really changed us. And God may still use those words to strengthen us in our rough times.

In Deuteronomy 3:28, God instructs Moses to encourage Joshua as Joshua prepares to take over from him. Following Moses would have been a tough job - Moses had rescued God's people from slavery! No pressure! But Moses' last task is one of encourager. At this point, it's not about Moses going further; it's about someone else's journey. God asks Moses to build up Joshua, so that Joshua can take the next steps set out for him, which would also benefit the whole nation.

Sometimes, all the next world-changer needs is some God-filled, encouraging words to get them going into what God's called them to do.

So what now? Go old-school today. Get some paper and a pen and write someone an encouraging letter. Of course you could text them or Facebook them, but there's something permanent about getting a physical letter or note. And go further - buy a stamp and post it! Use your words well!
