What's God like?

Thursday, 18 June 2026

AW Tozer said, 'What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.' Who we understand God to be will, perhaps obviously, shape who we are. If we think God is always angry, we're more likely to feel higher stress levels, increased anger and increased depression. If we understand that God is love, we'll find it easier to be generous, have self-control and forgive others and ourselves. How we understand God has a real effect on how we see the world and live our lives. God knows that; he's fairly familiar with how we're wired. So is it any surprise he's so keen to show us how he loves us?

So, our view of God? Do we find thinking about God-and-our-life stressful? Get easily wound up when people believe different things to us? Time to refresh our idea of who God is. First stop? The Bible. The Gospels, to be specific: God went to the lengths of being born on earth to show us who he is (and to bring joy to the world). Let's look at how Jesus interacts with everyday people, for a clue. Secondly: how we're praying gives a gauge of how we see him. Are we approaching him anxiously or with an expectant heart?

So what now? If your prayers have the peaceful gratefulness of someone who knows they're loved, then you're praying to the Father that Jesus revealed. And if they're not like that, then ask him to reveal himself to you more and more.
