Deep breath!

Friday, 6 February 2026

You've just started reading, but stop... and take that deep breath mentioned in the title. How did that feel? Did you feel anything extraordinary or was it just normal? Breathing is an automatic function that we don't have to think about - thank goodness! But, there's actually a whole lot going on when we breathe - oxygen makes its way to blood vessels, carbon dioxide works its way back out, lungs move, the diaphragm gets in on the act: all part of the amazing and intricate process that keeps us alive.

God looks over us, lovingly and steadily, providing all we need. From breathing to eating, to speaking and sleeping, God created our bodies to allow us to do all of that. It's one sign of his love for us.

The Bible says, 'God formed the man from the dust... and blew the breath of life into his nostrils' (Genesis 2:7 GWT). We may forget that we need to breathe, but God has given us the air for each breath and he means for us to enjoy it. Let's be encouraged that in all our circumstances God 'will sustain [us]' (Psalm 55:22 NIV). Literally, 'in him we live and move and have our being' (Acts 17:28 NKJV).

So what now? Do this breathing exercise. As you breathe in, thank God for giving you the breath of life, and as you breathe out, ask him to give you opportunities to share how wonderfully he has made you, and all people, as you go about your day.
