Stand on God's word (3)
When we're controlled by materialism. Materialism is about 'more, more, more!' It's okay to want a decent phone, reliable car, new outfit and so on - and God is not against us having these things, but he's far more concerned about our heart condition. When the things we want take God's place in our lives, or we want more than we need or more than what's required to fulfil his will, that's a problem. Solomon writes, 'If you love money and wealth, you will never be satisfied with what you have' (Ecclesiastes 5:10 CEV).
Before we ask God for something material, let's ask him to reveal his purpose for our lives, because that's what's of value. Jesus said, 'Guard against all kinds of greed. Life is not measured by how much one owns' (Luke 12:15 NCV).
God uses a different measuring stick. His word says he is 'able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work...Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and...your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God' (2 Corinthians 9:8, 10-11 NIV).
So what now? God is willing to bless you materially, but as you seek his will you'll find that material things take lower priority in your life. Enjoy the blessings of his Spirit.
